What’s Involved?
A great canyoning descent. Theres no deep pools but plenty of abseiling down waterfalls and a heart stopping zip-line.
Who is it for?
This is for adults only (18+)
Crypt Canyon is a real canyoning adventure that takes place deep inside a steep sided Lakeland ravine in the Lake District. You will descend it, plummeting into its depths as you abseil its many waterfalls until you are faced with a heart stopping zip-line off its final huge drop.
This 2.5 – 3.5 hour experience is great for those that want a longer Lake District Canyoning experience, but not a full day.
The parking at the location is pay and display. Changing into the provided wetsuits will take place at the cars prior to setting off.
After meeting and getting changed into wetsuits we walk the steep 30 minute ascent to the start point. Everyone will be given a bag to carry filled with either rope, the first aid kit or drinks needed for the activity.
Enroute we stop and teach you how to use the specialised canyoning equipment and how to abseil.
We will then guide and support you as you abseil yourself down through the deep ravine to the exit point – this will be reached via a huge zip line. A celebratory high five is given and then you walk back downhill to the cars.
This canyon is adults only (18+). No previous experience is required, however, you will find it beneficial if you have previously taken part in abseiling and/or canyoning prior to coming out. You must be active, fit and able.
Points to consider prior to booking:
The canyon isn’t easily escapable due to the steep terrain surrounding it. You cannot simply walk around obstacles if you decide you have bitten off more than you can chew. Once we enter it we must complete it which makes this a committing outing.
This location can handle a bit of rain and is a safe bet, however it can and will be cancelled if the water level is too high as the flow becomes too powerful. However, we have built up a lot of experience over the years and we will make the right decision of whether or not to run your session.
There is another option close by that can handle high water levels if this location isn’t safe to run and we can defer to this alternative if deemed safe.
When attending your Crypt canyon activity day with us in the Lake district, the following equipment will be provided:
Be sure to come prepared to this lake district activity with the following recommended items:
The activity will last no more than 4 hours from the point we meet to the point we say goodbye.
It will usually last 2.5 -3.5 hours but the exact time depends on group size, the confidence and ability as well as the fitness of the participants and also the water conditions.
We run this location from roughly mid March to mid October depending on the type of spring/autumn we are having.
Please be aware that the sessions go ahead even if it is cold, windy, raining and even snowing (to a point).
Only unsafe water levels and unavoidable ice will stop this activity.
Secret location – to be confirmed once payment has been made in full.
Easily reached from southern and the central Lake District – such as Windermere, Coniston, Grasmere, Ambleside and Langdale.
Pro’s
Cons:
All of the activities we offer are physical and involve a degree of fitness (some more than others). We recommend you look at each individual activity page to see if it is suitable for you. All of our activities involve wearing a harness, so your waist cannot exceed 46 inches or the safety equipment will not fit.
This is impossible to answer without knowing you or your group personally. If you read each activity page it will hopefully help, we can also give general guidance
A deposit is required to secure your chosen date, time and activity if you are booking more than 14 days in advance. Your deposit is non refundable or transferable. Full payment is required within 14 days.
No sorry, none of our activities are suitable for a dog to join in.
There are no refunds/rescheduling if you miss the meet time and the session may start without you. You may be joining others, we may have a group after you etc so can’t always delay the start time. Allow plenty of time to travel around the Lake District. The traffic from Windermere especially from mid morning can be very slow with jams. Mobile reception is limited but we will have your mobile number and you will have ours on the PDF Info sheet you receive when you book.
You will lose the deposit payment if you cancel with more than 14 days notice. If you cancel within 14 days you will lose the full balance.
You will receive a full refund- or you can opt to rebook. There is no pressure to do this option. If we cancel because of dangerous water conditions at a location (ghyll/canyoning) then we will try to offer an alternative if possible, which you are under no obligation to do.
We run our activities in all weather conditions if it’s safe to do so. If it’s raining and/or cold the activity will go ahead. Wrap up warm with waterproof clothing if you’re abseiling. For ghyll scrambling/canyoning we have high quality, thick canyoning specific wetsuits especially imported from Spain. We wear the same wetsuits as you – so you know you are getting excellent quality. If the rain has been heavy and persistent we may have to cancel/ swap locations if the water levels are dangerous (see question above)
