What’s Involved?
A very adventurous and aquatic outing involving jumps, slides and roped lowers down waterfalls.
Who is it for?
Suitable for adults and adventurous children of 12 years and above. Adults shouldn’t be put off by the age limit. It’s 12+ due to being able to bypass jumps.
Coppermines Canyon is the best 2-3hr canyoning descent the Lake District has to offer! It takes place in a stream known as Church Beck in Coniston in the South of the Lake District National park.
In this Lake District canyoning activity, you will plunge your way down a beautiful mountain stream into pristine pools water with exhilarating jumps, heart stopping slides and epic roped lowers down waterfalls!
This is an action packed, fast and punchy descent that is perfect for those adrenaline seekers that only have a couple of hours to spare.
The parking at the location is pay and display and changing into provided wetsuits will take place at the cars prior to setting off.
After meeting and getting changed into wetsuits we walk the 20 minute ascent to the start point. After a safety brief we will enter the canyon and descend it.
You will slide your way down stream via natural waterslides, jumps and roped lowers. This is an action packed Lake District activity and the water is crystal clear. The final section will blow your mind.
Once down the final slide you will walk back to the cars on cloud nine, wishing dearly that you had chosen an all day activity.
This is not what most companies are referring to as “the canyon section” of Church Beck or “the top section”. Our experience starts higher up and is more involved.
The Coppermines Canyon is fine for “first-timers” – no previous experience is necessary. This activity is for adults and children of 12+.
However, you must be confident in water as this is a very aquatic outing and participants must be comfortable with getting submerged in/being around both fast flowing and deep water.
Although the wetsuits are thick and buoyant and will keep you afloat, you will be in deep pools at times so must be able to swim to the side.
Furthermore, you must be able to walk unaided in a rocky stream without being terrified of slipping.
A realistic level of fitness is also required for this as it is a physically demanding activity.
Finally, all under 18’s must be accompanied by their own parent or legal guardian.
It is a very aquatic outing that takes place in and around both fast flowing and deep water. The canyon can and will be ran in times of moderately higher water levels (group dependant).
When the water level is too high Coppermines Canyon can be very fierce and unsafe and we will cancel the session and if possible defer to another location in Langdale that can handle a lot of rain.
A positive thing about the canyon is that it never runs dry/low in prolonged spells of warm dry weather. We can have weeks of no rain (it has happened!) and there is still plenty of water in here!
When running an activity day at the Coppermines Canyon you will be provided with the following:
While most important equipment will be provided, it would be beneficial to come with the following items:
The activity will last no more than 3 hours from the point we meet in the Lake District location to the point we say goodbye.
It will usually last 2-3 hours but the exact time varies depending on group size, water conditions, ability and fitness levels.
We run this location all year, however, it will be adults only roughly November-February. Please be aware that the sessions go ahead even if it is cold, windy, raining and even snowing. So have this in mind if you book for the colder months as there is more chance of poor weather and you need to be up for it.
So to reinforce the point further – please expect for the canyoning to go ahead even in poor weather and if you are not keen on this idea then don’t book.
The only time we cancel this activity is if the conditions make the activity unsafe – and this decision is made by the instructor and is usually due to dangerously high water levels.
The meeting point is Old Furness Road, Coniston, LA21 8HU.
This is an industrial estate with parking. There are free spaces to park here but have change handy in case these are taken and you have to use the Pay and Display area.
You are looking for a logo’d van parked up on the road. Please leave enough time for travelling as there are no refunds for the people who arrive late.
Pro’s
Cons:
All of the activities we offer are physical and involve a degree of fitness (some more than others). We recommend you look at each individual activity page to see if it is suitable for you. All of our activities involve wearing a harness, so your waist cannot exceed 46 inches or the safety equipment will not fit.
This is impossible to answer without knowing you or your group personally. If you read each activity page it will hopefully help, we can also give general guidance.
A deposit is required to secure your chosen date, time and activity if you are booking more than 14 days in advance. Your deposit is non refundable or transferable. Full payment is required within 14 days
No sorry, none of our activities are suitable for a dog to join in.
There are no refunds/rescheduling if you miss the meet time and the session may start without you. You may be joining others, we may have a group after you etc so can’t always delay the start time. Allow plenty of time to travel around the Lake District. The traffic from Windermere especially from mid morning can be very slow with jams. Mobile reception is limited but we will have your mobile number and you will have ours on the PDF Info sheet you receive when you book.
You will lose the deposit payment if you cancel with more than 14 days notice. If you cancel within 14 days you will lose the full balance.
You will receive a full refund- or you can opt to rebook. There is no pressure to do this option. If we cancel because of dangerous water conditions at a location (ghyll/canyoning) then we will try to offer an alternative if possible, which you are under no obligation to do.
We run our activities in all weather conditions if it’s safe to do so. If it’s raining and/or cold the activity will go ahead. Wrap up warm with waterproof clothing if you’re abseiling. For ghyll scrambling/canyoning we have high quality, thick canyoning specific wetsuits especially imported from Spain. We wear the same wetsuits as you – so you know you are getting excellent quality. If the rain has been heavy and persistent we may have to cancel/ swap locations if the water levels are dangerous (see question above)
